Durham Arts Council
Durham Arts Council, Inc. is a catalyst in the cultural development of Durham – it leads,
inspires, and promotes excellence in and access to the creation, experience, and active
support of the arts for all the people of our community. Founded in 1954 to promote and nurture the arts of Durham, Allied Arts was renamed
Durham Arts Council, Inc. (DAC) in 1975 when it became what is now the second oldest arts council in the United States .
From Apex to Zebulon and everywhere in between, The United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County (United Arts) partners with businesses, individuals, foundations, and government to reach over 1.2 million people across Wake County annually through its grants, programs, and events.
United Arts believes we need creative individuals to inspire us, enlighten us, and cross boundaries to bring us together through art. Our Artist Support Grants fund professional and artistic development for emerging and established artists to create work, improve their business operations, or bring their work to new audiences. Artist Support Grants support a broad range of talented artists in the disciplines of visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, and interdisciplinary arts. Individual artists and small, unincorporated groups of collaborating artists who have lived in Chatham, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, or Wake County for at least one year are eligible to apply for grants up to $1,500.
Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, South Arts is a nonprofit regional arts organization empowering artists, organizations, and communities, and increasing access to arts and culture. In partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the State Arts Agencies of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee — with additional funding from other public and private donors such as the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation — South Arts supports artists and organizations through a rich and responsive portfolio of grants, fellowships, and programs.
Why? Because South Arts believes that the arts elevate the region, increasing connectedness and inspiring meaningful change in the process.
The North Carolina Arts Council launched its work in 1967 as awareness of the importance of arts to all citizens was becoming a national movement. Since then, the arts in North Carolina have come to be valued as one of our state’s most durable and productive assets.
After decades of vigorous work, experimentation, and refinement, our state’s arts infrastructure reaches into all 100 counties through one of the most highly developed and effective networks of local arts councils in our nation. An abundance of outstanding artists and arts organizations continues to enrich our communities. Artists and institutions improve quality of life, educate and inspire our youth, and stimulate an extraordinary amount of economic activity.
National Endowment for the Arts
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), established in Congress in 1965, is an independent federal agency that is the largest funder of the arts and arts education in communities nationwide and a catalyst of public and private support for the arts. By advancing equitable opportunities for arts participation and practice, the NEA fosters and sustains an environment in which the arts benefit everyone in the United States.
